Become a tour guide with Plant Chicago!
Plant Chicago is a small 501(c)3 non-profit with the mission to develop circular economies of food production, energy conservation and materials reuse; while empowering people of all backgrounds to make their cities healthier and more efficient.
We’re housed inside of The Plant, which is a 94,000 sq/ft former meat packing plant, which has been repurposed into a community of collaborative food businesses all focused on reusing waste products.
In a circular economy, waste is reimagined. Rather than making waste products just “go away” the circular economy envisions our waste stream as a circle, where waste becomes a closed-loop, feeding into another business or system.
Inside of The Plant, there is a bakery, coffee roaster, brewery, flower farm, spice distributor, aquaponic farm, ice maker, cheese monger, two hydroponic farms, two outdoor gardens, a mushroom farm and chickens. The concept is that each business at The Plant produces a valuable waste product, which may be fed back into another business.
Plant Chicago gives tours of The Plant, as an example of the circular economy in action. The tours attract people from far and wide – from across the globe to our neighbors right here in Back of the Yards.
We give Group Tours Tuesday – Saturday from 10 am – 4 pm, given availability and we host Public Tours every Saturday at 2 pm, with additional tours on our Farmers Market days (every first Saturday of the month).
We need your help giving tours! If you are interested in a sustainable food system, healthy food for all, closed loop systems, architecture, history, food and of course, talking to a diverse array of people, becoming a tour guide is right for you!
Join Plant Chicago for our tour guide training on Saturday 1/21 at 11:30 am. The training should take roughly an hour and a half, coffee and donuts will be provided. Please email Education and Outreach Manager Kassie Hinrichsen at email@example.com with any questions or check out our Facebook for more details.
See you there!
