Led by Manchester Metropolitan University, the Place-based Circular Society Innovations (Pb-CSI) project
investigates how circular society projects can be developed and run and, where appropriate, scaled-up, to support more just, inclusive and environmentally sustainable living in local places.
The project will explore CSI by investigating case studies of up to 100 place-based projects and organizations that combine social justice, economic resilience and environmental sustainability objectives. The aim is to create actionable recommendations for policymakers and practitioners that will enable CSI to be scaled-up for just and sustainable living.
Executive Director Jonathan Pereira joins the advisory group alongside representatives from Renew in Manchester (UK), ReLondon (UK), Koroinen - Centre for Living Culture, Turku (Finland), and various sites in Utrecht (Netherlands).
While the project is just getting started, it is inspiring to hear about amazing projects and what can be accomplished when governments invest circular economy projects. The reality is that member countries in the EU are actually taking circularity seriously by providing funding, setting goals, and more. Contrast this with the United States where projects like Plant Chicago, tool libraries, reuse depots, and more are largely left to find their way through the generosity of individuals and philanthropic foundations.
